Captain's log #16

Recovery today. Nothing to report.

As today is the deadline I set for myself, I'll set a new one; I'll extend these posts until #20, the number of years of boredom that Leonard got sentenced to.

The road ahead

I had set the purpose for myself of releasing one sonic product every week till February. Mission accomplished. With that purpose, what I intended was to get myself back in the habit of releasing stuff, get the deadline adrenaline pumping, and iterating through my processes through doing, which most of the time is the only way you can obtain actual improvements on them. What next? The upcoming stake on the ground, one new song per month until the end of the year, was decided beforehand, and going through this experience hasn't shown the need to redefine it, so I'll stick to it --at least this one first month, and let's see how it goes. However, I've been doing some reflection about the way to deploy it. The delivery schedule for this blog will remain as usual: one weekly post, or rather "one post within every week". However, I'm not going to continue with the weekly sonic deliveries. Too much things are flowing, and the monthly song is going t...

New Album "Pale Reflections" by Maple Dye

Image
Pale Reflections by Maple Dye Here's an album so diverse that it's almost a mixtape. Some of the tracks were recorded in 2013 (and the composition of some of the song reaches back all the way to 1993!). They span through 2 countries, 5 houses, 3 audio interfaces... no wonder they are so varied. After trying different approaches for the playlist order, what I finally found was creating a bit of an "EP within an EP". The first series of songs starts with "As My Mood Goes Down" and closes with "Teaser Of Hell". From that point on, I looked at it as sort of an "after party", as if saying "OK, if you feel like it there's still more music ahead, but be warned that things are getting a bit weirder from this point on..." All in all, I listen to the collection with joy (although it will also be a "joy" to stop listening for a while after these repetitive final steps...) My favorite this round is perhaps "Oh Dirty Hap...

Method (5)

I probably first heard of Theory of Constraints in Mark Graban's podcast. One of his guests spoke with veneration of Dr. Goldratt's visit to their firm, where he delivered one of his last presentations short before passing away in 2011. I watched the presentation, and also watched the film adaptation of his popular business novel 'The Goal', which gives you an overview of what TOC can do for you. To give a brief overview, TOC sees reality as processes just like Lean, but its efforts are focused on finding the 'bottleneck' or 'funnel mouth' that every process has, as that is the 'weak spot' that will condition the throughput of the whole system. The funnel image comes here very handy: if you try to increase the capacity of a funnel only by pouring more water into it, all you're going to do is overflowing the funnel. Everything is useless unless you widen the mouth of the funnel. And that is true of any process; you ha...
