Captain's log #17

Ah, that's better. Feeling much rejuvenated now. Funny how yesterday at some point, during my "rest day", one of the things I did, spontaneously, just because, was grabbing the guitar and playing some tunes. I think that's the spirit. Keep it fun.

I still have to make it through my Bruce Wayne life so I don't know how much of me will be left when I get to the music. But I have to make some serious dent on the drum tracks thing today. The task has suddenly become daunting, and I know where that leads; there's a familiar stink in the air...

I think I'll try getting analytical, listing all the problems and deciding how to tackle them before diving in. Regarding the arrangement, I'll give it a deadline and if I cannot make it I'll cut my loses and go back to the simpler version I was using. I hate it but I hate more taking so long to release stuff (consolation thought: I can always re-record later.)

The sad thing is, if I had a human drummer with me, with shared influences, all it would take would be the time to tell him, "here something like tutupa tutupaku", and he would know what I was going for. Drumgizmo is great, but the next enhancement has to be a human player.

In the future I also want to research if Soundcloud would allow the "dripping album" system. I think it would take a lot of pressure out for me launching the songs as I finish them, and I still keep the option of the finished album in Bandcamp when the moment comes.

Road marks

A combination of cool features in my current DAW (Reaper) has allowed me to create something that looks a lot like the road signs you see while you're driving. It makes for a great experience, and also reduces mistakes and the time it takes to rehearse things. I'm loving it and I hope it lasts and I can build upon it. The features required are: 1) enabling the option that makes the playhead stay at the center of the screen (therefore the waveforms scroll when you play the song). 2) Creating a track for empty items with text. (I've customized this one so I only need a keypress, and each annotation comes with a different, random color). Once I've done that, I play the song and start to rehearse on top the track I want to record (in this first experience, it was a bass track).   Maple Dye · When We Make It Through The Storm Maple Dye · Potato Swing I rarely write songs about "current reality" issues, mostly because I'm a poetic being, and I know that kind of subjects are condemned not to last. However, sometimes that kind of songs happen to me. "When We Make It Through The Storm" is one of them. It was written in march/april 2020, when the frickin damn virus thing was starting and nobody knew what things were going to be like... My fear and my hope (and my fatigue of being a human, which was already at huge levels... It was like "and now, on top of it, vampires!") came through with this song, which I like a lot although I don't have the necessary distance to judge it impartially, if I ever can.
